NASA Mission researching climate change

United States space agency NASA will launch the first mission dedicated to oceanographic research in the Arctic Ocean ice cover.
Mission ‘Climate Impacts on Ecosystems and Environmental Chemistry Arctic Pacific,’ or Icescape, will utilize icebreaker U.S. Coast Guard, the Healy, on 15 June. More than 40 scientists will be spending five weeks at sea to conduct sampling of physical properties of chemical and biological ocean waters and ice, to try to determine how changes affect the chemistry in the Arctic ocean and its ecosystems.

Last year, a study using data from NASA satellites show that the Arctic sea ice thinning dramatically between the winter of 2004 and 2008, with a thick older ice shrinks the equivalent of Alaska’s land area. ”Arctic sea ice is now only a thin layer of a thickness of 3 meters to 1.5 meters and completely vulnerable to climate change,” said Don Perovich, one Icescape chief scientist, said on Tuesday.

One of the key efforts of the mission Icescape will see how changes in the Arctic ocean could alter the ability to absorb carbon from the atmosphere. Greenhouse gas carbon dioxide is the main cause of global warming, and to be able to predict future climate changes, scientists need to know how the carbon cycle works in various parts of the world.

Icescape will concentrate on the Chukchi and Beaufort seas of Alaska, according to scientists who are highly vulnerable to global warming. An automated microscope at The Healy will take digital photos of phytoplankton cells to observe how many different species in the waters and the Arctic ice sheet. An appliance will be fitted with a float near real-time communications satellites for updating data.

Biodiversity of small mammals in North America is threatened due to global warming. Earth hotter cause the rise and fall of the food chain. ”Small Mammals of the most feel the effects,” the scientists concluded the United States recently.

Infant Mortality Rates
Many people consider infant mortality rates to be the yardstick by which the healthcare and the health of an entire nation can be measured. After all, who should receive better care than expecting mothers and their babies? It stands to reason that you could take rankings of each country in terms of infant mortality rates to see how well their healthcare systems are performing. When it comes to lowest infant mortality rates, the numbers don’t lie. Canada ranks as the 23rd country for the lowest infant mortality rates while the US comes in at a distant 43rd.
Preventable Deaths
Another criterion that should be considered is preventable deaths. Surely a country that manages to avoid more preventable deaths is superior and again the US healthcare system comes up short. In a ranking of the countries with the lowest number of preventable deaths Canada managed to obtain the 4th spot while the US only managed to claim the 14th spot. You would think with a country as affluent and advanced as the US that this country would excel in the area of preventable deaths but clearly this is not the case.

Life Expectancy
Life expectancy goes hand in hand with preventable deaths. In the same vein as keeping people from dying when it is preventable is keeping people healthy and alive in general. Life expectancy is a fair indicator of preventative care as well as care for acute and chronic conditions. The trend of Canada maintaining a significant lead over the US continues. Canada ranks as number 12 on this list while the US comes in at number 24.
Healthcare Expenditure
You can also judge a country by how much they spend on healthcare compared to how much they get out of it. In this case, a higher ranking on the list means that the country spends more of its gross domestic product on healthcare. One could argue that more money should be spent if it can substantially improve the quality of healthcare but when you compare the healthcare systems of the US and Canada it is quite the opposite. The US spends much more but has a less effective healthcare system. The US ranks as number 2 in spending while Canada is number 18. Canada has a better healthcare system and spends much less of its gross domestic product to get it.

Obesity
Obesity is a known and often preventable health problem. Healthcare is not just about healing the sick. It is about avoiding illness and conditions that lead to illness. The US has far higher obesity rates than Canada, putting the final nail in the US healthcare system’s coffin.
